Drum Making Workshops
I have been conducting drum making workshops for many years and have worked in a variety of locations including schools, preschools and private homes. Due to the variety of materials, duration of workshops and traveling distances I am unable to set a flat rate for workshops. Please feel free to email me with your location, drum requirements and number of participants for a workshop price.
Childrens Workshops
P.T drums: Participants cover a large tin with fabric or it can be painted prior to the workshop. A rawhide skin is then placed over the top and bottom of the tin and laced with a length of cord. You will need to collect large caterer size tins from milo, coffee, fruit juice etc. You will also need fabric with good patterns and colours - recycled dresses and shirts are great. I often have spare tins and fabric if you are unable to collect enough. To speed things up on the day paper labels and both top and bottom of the tins should be removed beforehand. use a top cutting can opener not a side cutter. I will provide tape, glue, pre-cut rawhide and cord. Parents are encouraged to come along and join in the fun. At the end of the workshop I will conduct a short percussion workshop with the drums made. Younger
children unable to attend the drum making workshop are also welcome to join in the percussion session.

Adult Workshops
Wooden Cylinder drums: Make your own wooden cylinder drum approximately 200-250mm diameter and approximately 300mm high. Drums may be either straight sided or tapered. Cut, punch holes, lace and tighten rawhide skins to produce your own drum. On completion you can learn some basic rythmes on your own unique drum. Workshop duration approximately 4hours.
Adult Workshops
Ashiko Drums: During this two day workshop you will create your own Ashiko drum in either large approx 800mm x 300mm or medium size approx 650mm x 250mm. The Ashiko is a tapered drum of African origin that is able to be tightened and tuned. Day 1 - Participants cut skins, punch holes, wrap and tie rope to rings, then lace cord top and bottom pulling skin down onto a pre-made cylinder. Day 2 - When the skin is fully dried ropes are tightened vertically then cross laced creating diamond knots further tensioning the drum skin. We will do some basic drumming rythmes on completion of the workshop.
Adult Workshops
Healing Drums: One of my favourite drums is the North American Healing drum. These drums are round or octagonal frames covered with deer or elk skin. The drum and beater are made in the traditional way with thanks and ritual. Use this drum to connect with Mother Earth and your own heart. A drum of empowerment to lift, balance and clear the inner being. Create your own healing drum of approximately 440mm diameter x 70mm. Workshop duration approximately 6 hours.
